We will be helping you prepare for your audition.
You will be dancing with Ms. Linda, our choreographer, so bring your dance shoes.
You will receive an audition time for Tuesday, October 16th.
For your company audition you will need to memorize and prepare:
1. 16 bars of a song
2. A short monologue
*Below you will find the song lyrics with accompaniment music and monologues that we presented

On Tuesday, 10/16/18
You will arrive 10 minutes prior to your scheduled audition appointment.
You will present your memorized and prepared song and monologue and then be released.

AUDITION MATERIAL
Mrs. Atchelli practiced 16 bars of two different songs with you-
Gary Indiana and Where Is Love.
Choose one of the songs to practice and perform for your audition.
You will perform only the 16 bars that you practiced.
(This is very common for auditions.)

      ~Here is a definition for 16 "bars"
        Bar - (definition) A measure.
The number of beats in a "bar" is determined by the time signature.

Here are the monologue choices-
Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr.

Carlotta
This is the maid from the castle, she is talking to Belle

Imagine, washing up like that on the beach. Must’ve been a horrible shipwreck! I don’t suppose we’ll ever know the truth. Why, you can’t even speak, poor dear! Well, never mind - after your scrub in the tub, you’re fresh as a daisy in a beautiful new frock!

Triton
King Triton is talking to a large group of people. He is moving between two very different emotions.

Benevolent Merfolk… welcome! It’s wonderful to see all of you here. Ever since the Sea Witch robbed us of our dear queen, celebrations like these have lifted my spirits. Thank you. (Lightening the mood) Well, what are we waiting for? Let the festivities begin!

Sebastian
The crab is talking to Ariel who he is very fond of and concerned for.

Now, I should march you right back to your father - (Ariel shakes her head “no”)… All right, child. I’m in. But we got to get that boy to kiss you before it's too late! Now, a few pointers from a clever crab to a little mermaid. You gotta bat your eyes, like this… (he demonstrates, she copies) Then you gotta pucker your lips, like this… (he demonstrates, she copies) Oh, that’s good! You put those two things together tomorrow and you got that boy in the palm of your hand.

Ursula
The Sea Witch is talking to Ariel. Ursula wants Ariel to take the deal because of what she herself will gain.

I have a spell that will turn you into a human for three days. Before the Sun sets on the third day, you’ve got to get dear ol’ princey to KISS you. If you do, you’ll stay human forever. If you don’t, you’ll turn back into a mermaid and your soul will be mine forever! Life’s full of tough choices, isn’t it?

Ariel
Ariel is with all her treasures from the surface world. She has a huge shift in emotion when her father enters.

(examining a telescope)  And now let me see… what did Scuttle call this one? Is it a ditty-whumper? A thumb-doodle? Whatever it is… Prince Eric held it in his own strong, beautiful human hands - (King Triton bursts in, ready to destroy the grotto.) No Daddy! They’re my treasures!

Disney’s The Lion King, Jr.

Scar
Scar is responsible for his brother, Mufasa’s, death. He doesn’t want all the other lions to know, but he does want to be king.

Mufasa’s death is a terrible tragedy. But to lose Simba too..? For me, it is a deep, personal loss. So it is with a heavy heart that I assume the throne. Yet out of the ashes of this tragedy, we shall rise to greet the dawning of a new era - in which lion and hyena come together in a great and glorious future!

Mufasa
The King is speaking to his son and handing down important information that Simba will need to know when he becomes king.

You see Simba, everything exists in a delicate balance. As king, you need to understand that balance and respect all creatures - from the crawling ant to the leaping antelope. We eat the antelope, but when we die, our bodies become the grass, and the antelope eat the grass. Everything is connected in the great circle of life.

Seussical, Jr.

MRS. MAYOR
She is talking to her son about his daydreaming in school. She is worried about him.

But we've just had a talk with your teachers today
And they didn't have one single good thing to say
You invented new thinks which defy all description!
You gave Miss O'Dooley a nervous conniption!
We don't mean to scold you.
We love you, oh, yes, dear.
But couldn't you try thinking just a bit less, dear?

Disney’s Aladdin, Jr.

Aladdin
This speech comes near the end of the show and Aladdin has decided to be completely honest with Jasmin.

Princess, I have nothing to offer you. No money, no jewels, no lands. No special powers, no important friends. But, I will stand by you, and with you, no matter what. That’s the only offer I can make. Whew! (to Genie) Now that was hard!

Jasmine
She is talking to “Prince Ali”. She really liked Aladdin when she met him, he inspired her. Now she’s worried about him.

Do I know you? You remind me of someone I met in the marketplace. He was arrested. The one thing he wanted was his freedom. And he lost that, thanks to me. He’ll never come back, nobody escapes from Jafar. And even if he did, it would mean death if he ever showed his face around here.

Genie
The Genie is talking to Aladdin. He’s so excited to be out of the lamp and can’t wait to find out what the first wish is.

Oy! Ten thousand years in a tin can’ll give you such a crick in the neck!  (cracks his neck) Okay, that’s better!  Now then, “Your wish is my command”, yadda, yadda, you know the drill, so shoot…  C’mon kid, what’s it gonna be? Cash, camels, Casbahs? You must want something, but no wishing for more wishes, okay? ‘Cuz that’s just so yesterday. But otherwise, you’re the boss. This is your lucky day. All your dreams are coming true.

You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown

CHARLIE BROWN
Charlie is full of joyful anticipation for the day ahead. Then something goes terribly wrong.

Some days I wake up early and watch the sun rise. And I think how beautiful it is. How my life lies before me. And I get very positive feeling about things . . . Like this morning for instance, the sky is so clear and the sun is so bright. . . How can anything go wrong on a day like this? (alarm clock rings) I'm late!!

CHARLIE BROWN
Charlie REALLY wants to talk to the red-haired girl and is giving himself a pep talk. Then he has a big change of mind.
I think I'll just walk right up to that little red-haired girl and introduce myself. I think I'll introduce myself and then I think I'll ask her to come over here and sit next to me. I think I'll ask her to sit by me and then I think I'll tell her how much I've always admired her... I think I'll flap my arms and fly to the moon.

LUCY
Lucy is convincing her little brother that she will be a magnificent queen, but her un-royal personality keeps pushing through.

Linus, do you know what I intend. I intend to be a queen. When I grow up I'm going to be the biggest queen there ever was. And I'll live in a big palace with a big front lawn and have lots of beautiful dresses to wear. And, when I go out in my coach all the people will wave, and I will SHOUT at them. And in the summertime, I will go to my summer palace and I will wear my crown in swimming and everything. And all the people will cheer and I will SHOUT at them.

SALLY
To Sally this is a huge life decision that she was victoriously able to conquer. And then something terrible happened.

I couldn't decide if I wanted fudge marble, chocolate, rocky road, or vanilla. I finally decided on fudge marble. Then I had to choose between a plain cone or a sugar cone. I choose the sugar cone. SO what happened? I walk out and drop the whole thing on the sidewalk. Don't tell me my life isn't a Shakespearean tragedy.

Notes, final dress rehearsal

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! Y’all did it!
You got out there in front of an audience and put it all together. Singing, dancing, character
work, staging, props, entrances, exits, quick changes, nervous butterflies and all!

Second of all, you have a beautiful story to tell, not because the story is that amazing,
but because you are. You have invested so much time, energy, effort in the production.
You are supported by so many wonderful people who have created an amazing set,
costumes, programs, props, sound design, lights,...the list goes on and on.
Take every advantage of this. Every moment on stage and off should be spent
doing your part to tell the story to the audience.
(Even if that means sitting on a chair quietly in the green room.)

Third of all- SLEEP, DRINK YOUR OJ & WASH YOUR HANDS. Stay healthy.

Fourth of all, volume, volume, volume! Nobody is too loud.

Fifth of all, individual notes-

Evlana-  "But behind..." Great!

Beast- You have a "ROAR!!" in this scene. Put it in. The Beast is furious!!

All- Opening song, Belle, get into position quickly and professionally. Exit in character.

Chip- It’s really important that you bring the mirror into the Beauty and the Beast scene.

Amy and Sophia- when you enter with the lantern in the battle, don’t get so
close to center, stay farther left.

Narrators- LOUDER! Draw the audience into the story. Always stand stage right or left
VERY close to the little brown, built in, stool type thing by the downstage stairs.
So close that you can touch it. Why? That’s where your mic is and that’s where your light is.

Hailey, Maddy and Natalie- after Mob Song (Kill the Beast) you need to cross down to those
narrator spots before you speak, otherwise you are silent and in the dark.

Mehreen- THIS IS A CHANGE, For scene #2, enter right, cross to the regular
narrator spot, then exit right.

Lefou- you can’t whistle while wearing a mic.  :0( Humming works though. :0)

Techies- don’t change scenery until the stage goes dark. I appreciate your eagerness,
but don’t jump the gun.

Torch carriers- make sure that Elise turns your torches on and off

Beast/Lumiere- What happened at the top of scene 11?
What is the problem so that we can solve it.

The audience is the most revered member of the theater. They are our guests, our evaluators. They make the performance meaningful.

Monday rehearsal notes

πŸ“Rehearsal Notes

Rosie, Sophia & Heewon- I like that you guys are creating business up there with the books but you can't LIKE the books. Belle is weird because she likes books, so maybe you all are looking at them trying to figure out what she sees in them.

Anna- Much better on " It's no wonder..." Now, finish the entire line, every single syllable,  before looking away

Evlana-  "But behind..." Great!

Villagers entering from the house- look at Gaston when you enter. He's singing. He's the most handsome thing you've ever seen.

Lefou- Bring the sack of game prop. It's under the prop table, left

Lefou & Gaston- open up!!

Narrators- you look bored in the forest

Babs- "Oh lala...." Louder!! Be excited! Surprised!! This is out of the ordinary! You've never walked into the room and seen a man there!

Beast- You have a "ROAR!!" in this scene. Put it in. The Beast is furious!!

Beast- When you enter this scene, stay to the right of seated Maurice.

Beast- take Papa off right

Gaston- When you enter down left don't wait for the girls, just GO confidently, leave the rest to them.

Gaston- Whatever line you say before crossing upstage, say the entire thing facing out, then turn to go up to propose.

Gaston- How do you feel when she turns you down and leaves you sitting there?

Silly Girls- Y'all rock! Make sure we can always see all of you, stay open. The last line of your song, "I want much more..." is your chance to chew the scenery! You're making fun of her for making a big deal out of everything. Your character is doing a giant, overblown imitation of Belle.

Ensemble & Gaston- Great job continuing with Gaston song even with some lyrics fumbled.

Athena- Make sure you've got all you entrances memorized.

Leads- the scene after the tavern, PLEASE LOOK AT YOUR BLOCKING FOR THIS SCENE. It's really messy and there's lots of wondering and awkward positions. I asked you Saturday to look at this blocking.

Thank you all!!

We've got magic to do!

Hello all!

This Tuesday we will begin at the top of the show and stumble along.
You need to be prepared to make each entrance at the right time and from the right place.

If you didn't fill out one of the forms that I put on the blog last week, you still need to.
Here are photos of the documents.
There are downloadable versions on last week's blog entry.

NOTES
Mob Song (Kill the Beast)
Gaston and Lefu- if there is space between "Kill him!" and the music starting, think about how you could fill it. Maybe you lean into each other and begin whispering plans? The empty space needs to be filled with a tense activity, but nothing loud enough to keep Kyle from hearing his cue.
Belle & Papa- you can help here too. Belle maybe crouch down to papa saying "We can't let this happen", etc. again not loud enough to cover Kyle's cue.

Anna- good timing, now 800 times louder and FULL OF FEAR. In your voice, in your face, in your body. Maybe holding the hand of one of your villager-friends, like we do when we're scared.

All- When Gaston sings "through the mist, through the wood...", you all look at him and lean toward him.

Gaston- "Say a prayer, then we're there" point to "there" right on the word, it's the back of the house.

All-  when Gaston sings  "Say a prayer, then we're there" look out to the back of the house on the word there. Lets see if we can make the audience think there is something creeping up behind them.

Stage left villagers- If you aren't able to do the movement and sing the lyrics for " It's a beast..." and "Massive paws..." I'm going to have to give it to some other performers. We can get you some help to rehearse it if you ask me or Mrs. Atchelli, and you need to practice it outside of rehearsal as well. Practice it together on break.

Villagers on the stairs- THIS IS A CHANGE Start your move down the aisle on "Hear him roar! See him foam!..." As you move, act as if you're looking for the Beast. Is your character brave or frightened??

All- "Good and dead! Kill the Beast!" on Beast everyone (except those with props) right fist and right foot go DOWN sharply.
The same with the "I am!"s - right fist and right foot go DOWN sharply.
"Hearts a blaze" right fist to heart
"Banners high" right hand up

All- you guys are doing great πŸ˜€with that quick snap turn up stage. Just make sure every one does it. And every one goes down on the "Scooby Doo" sound. - No one's character gets to be the one who stays standing. It's messy and communicates the wrong idea.

Battle
Chippy - We really need to hear "Charge!" Try Announcing  "Charge!" and then jump.

Babs, Aren & Lumiere- this is going to be a great bit. Babs, much more flirting and tickling with your feather duster. Why are you flirting with one of the bad guys? This guy has come to kill your master and burn down your palace, why are you being friendly to him? You are DISTRACTING him so that your besite can set his butt on fire and get him out of your house! Lumiere, make this into a big hammy, over-acted, chewing the scenery sneak-up on Aren. Aren, you need to run around IN PLACE with your butt on fire, yelling, before you exit.

Cogs- Doing great w/ "Tally ho!" Good job taking the note I gave you.

Lefou- After Chip spits in your face, be still for one beat -shocked with surprize- then give us a HUGE athletic move upstage (A backward roll? We can talk about it.) And VOCALIZE! "AHHHHHH!" It's hot! It hurts!!

Chip and Pots- πŸ‘ Yea! Loved the bowing

Madame- Sail in with great dignity, stay RIGHT, after your astounding note sail off left.

Beast, Belle & Gaston - good work on a difficult scene.

Transformers- The reentry scene will need to be filled with joy, excitement, spinning, hugging, enjoying your totally human bodies (and maybe some additional blocking- I hope not, I'm hoping we can fill it up with acting πŸ˜‰)

Everyone- in the finale SMILES!

All - Let's DO this thing!!

  Not in the wings!!

For who could ever learn to love a beast?

We could! We could!!

Alright everyone- here's where the rubber meets the road, it's time for a
Run Thru 🎭
This Tuesday we need to finish up the very end of the show- everyone (except poor Gaston) will come back on stage for the finale, and then we'll do bows.
THEN, we'll start at the beginning and start running through the show in order.
You need to know when and where your entrances are.

Remember-
Eat well, sleep lots, wash your hands!! Treat your voice as the instrument that it is.
