What are we looking for when you audition?
Students who really WANT to be in Master Class.

How will we know?
We're looking for students who are prepared.

~Introduce yourself with confidence, project and enunciate.

~Memorize your song and monologue backwards and forwards.

~Rehearse your song and monologue out loud at full voice, ask yourself:
.Who is my character talking to?
.Where is the person that my character is talking to?
(DON'T LOOK AT US while doing your monologue or song. We are not who your character is talking to.)
.Why is my character saying this? Make a decision. Make it important.

The monologues and song lyrics & rehearsal music are on last week's blog post.

2. MONOLOGUE CHOICES
~A monologue is a speech said by a single actor to themselves, the audience, or to another character.
Many auditions require actors to prepare monologues as a way of determining the actor's emotional and vocal range.

Peter and the Starcatcher
TEACHER (who was a fish): Well, well. . . nice of you to drop in.
I’m Teacher, I know your name is Peter. When you rode the trunk to this island,
seawater seeped inside. Then the starstuff in the trunk enchanted the water where
I was swimmin’. The starstuff’ll change you, too. It makes you what you want to be.
Sky’s the limit. You could even fly yourself home maybe,
just like you dreamed, Peter Pan.

MOLLY: You stop that right now. I won’t answer any such question. You’re leaning
toward the sentimental and that’s all well and good for a boy, but the fact is we girls
can’t afford to be sentimental. We must instead be strong. And when I marry,
I shall make it very clear to this person –
that sentimentality is not on the calendar. He will have to lump it or leave it.

Annie
MISS HANNIGAN: Get up! All of you. Now, for this one’s shenanigans,
you’ll all get down on your knobby little knees and clean this dump until
it shines like the top of the Chrysler Building. Get to work!! Why any kid
would want to be an orphan, I’ll never know.

Newsies
Ambitious young reporter and daughter of Pulitzer, KATHERINE PLUMBER, tries to
convince Jack how to win the war on her father
KATHERINE: Really Jack? Really? Only you can have a good idea?
Being boss doesn’t mean you have all the answers, just the brains to recognize
the right one when you hear it. The strike was your idea. The rally was Davey’s.
And now my plan will take us to the finish line. Deal with it.

Newsie leader, JACK KELLY, pleads with the scabs who are threatening to work during the
newsie strike
JACK : Listen fellas...I know somebody put yis up to this. Probably paid ya some extra money too. Well, it ain’t right. All across this city there are boys and girls who ought to be playin’ or going to school. Instead they’re slavin’ to support themselves and their folks. Fellas...for the sake of all the kids in every sweatshop and factory in this town, I beg you...throw down your papers and join the strike.

Shrek
FAIRYTALE CHARACTER 2 (kid): Now wait a minute! Maybe that ogre wasn’t
the answer but something better will come along, and we have to wait for it,
because that’s what fairytale characters do. We wait for miracles. We wish upon stars. Down with Farquaad! Power to piggies and the big bad wolf, and the three bears
and the sugar plum fairy!

Anne Of Green Gables
ANNE: Dreams don’t often come true, Mr. Cuthbert. Just now, I feel
pretty nearly perfectly happy. I can’t feel perfectly happy because what color would you call this? Red. That’s why I can’t ever be
perfectly happy. I can imagine I have a beautiful rose/leaf completion and lovely,
starry, violet eyes. But I cannot imagine my red hair away. It will be my life-long sorrow.

The Secret Garden
MARY: Could you keep a secret if I told you one? It’s a great secret.
I don’t know what I should do if anyone found out. I believe I should die!
I’ve stolen a garden. It isn’t mine. It isn’t anybody’s. Nobody wants it,
nobody cares for it. They’re letting it die, all shut up by itself. It’s mine now.

3. SONG CHOICES
Choose one of the songs to practice and perform for your audition.
You will perform only the 16 bars that you practiced. This is very common for auditions.

~Here is a definition for 16 "bars"
        Bar - (definition) A measure.
