FAMILIES

The Big Ask

On Tuesday while we're recording, please help the kids to have a quiet space and the best internet connection possible. It should only take us about half an hour. See if the kids can close extra tabs on their computer and situate themselves near the wifi router or, even better, use an ethernet cable. You could possibly take an internet-free coffee break at this time. 

I totally, totally, totally understand that this is during your work (from home) day so, of course, you can only do what you can do. 

*I'll be recording these and figure out how to share them with you and the Keppel teachers.

ACTORS

Rehearse

-It's called "readers theatre" but you should not be reading, be very familiar with your script. Look at the camera most of the time.

-Remember, the audience has never heard this story before, strive to engage them.

-Practice out loud.

-Don't let the energy go down at the end of sentences.

-Use facial expressions.

-Use gestures (hands, arms, shoulders, head) throughout. *Used at the start of a line, a gesture will draw the audience's attention to you.*

-Consider any exits/entrances that you might make and mark them in your script

-Consider any activities your character may be engaged in and mark them in your script (a few examples: swimming, searching, hiding, curling up, rolling around in circles, waving "hello", waving your arm graciously as if it were your tail, opening your mouth to eat, or yawn, or hiccough, or spit out a human).

-Characters- communicate with the other characters. Listen to them. Talk to them.

-Narrators, color your verbs and adjectives.

Get Technical

-Have a clear, short path from your mouth to your microphone

-Please put together a found-items, character-appropriate costume

-Gather any props that you want to use. (you must particularly remember the suspenders, Best Beloved)

-Decide if you are going to use a story-appropriate virtual background or an "actual" background that is either plain and uncluttered or decorated in a simple way that will add to the story. (Ex: a house plant for Armadillos. a blue sheet for Whale)

You all (actors and actors' families) ROCK!

Wednesday, April 22nd is for Amabie!!

We're goin off the rails today!
Come back Monday for readers theatre info (read the stories on the google classroom in the meantime).

I learned about a character from Japanese folklore, and I fell a little bit in love. ๐Ÿ’–

Amabie is a mermaid-like yลkai (spirit) with long hair and a scaly body. It has a beak-like mouth, and three legs. It glows with a bright light that can be seen from the shore.
Legends: The only recorded sighting of an amabie comes from Higo Province (present-day Kumamoto prefecture) in April of 1846. For some nights in a row, a bright light could be seen in the waters off shore. One night, a government official went out to see to investigate the strange light. When he approached, a strange creature appeared to him. The creature introduced itself as an amabie. It told the government official that a six-year bumper crop was coming. It also said that should there be an outbreak of disease, he should immediately show the amabie’s picture to people everywhere, as it would protect them against harm. After that, the creature returned to the sea. Shortly after, the amabie’s story along with a woodblock print image of it was featured in the newspaper to be distributed to as many people as possible.

I challenge you to make an Amabie for your house, and send me a pic. cgilbert@gusd.net
I'll post an Amabie Gallery!!๐Ÿ˜Š

Here are some examples I found-

Hello actors!

1. Reader's Theater
Jade, Samantha, Sadie, Narineh, Anri, Sienna, Juliet, Colton, Aram & Eva,
Let's schedule a rehearsal for ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ‹Just So Stories๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿง๐Ÿช
I'd like to either a Zoom or a Google Meet on Tuesday at 2:30.
Do your teachers all use Zoom? Is that the easiest?
I'll let you know what's up through the email addresses that you or your folks used to contact me.
Thanks for joining the project!!

2. Sing-Along
Mrs. Acitelli and I thought we'd have an all Master Class sing-along ๐ŸŽถ
(Thank you Juliet for the idea for a get together ๐Ÿ’–)
Please give us some ideas of songs from Marry Poppins and other musicals that you'd like to sing and we'll make a date for a Zoom or Google Meet sing-along-party!
You can either put the ideas in the comment section below or email them to me- cgilbert@gusd.net
Spread the word!!
I'll update you here when we have a plan.

season 3 the great snail race GIF by SpongeBob SquarePants

Check out the Anything Can Happen video!

And now... A NEW PROJECT
Who would like to do some Reader's Theater?
I found some scripts adapted from Rudyard Kippling's Just So Stories
(which I L❤️️VE).
Depending on how many people want to participate, I thought we could cast a couple of the stories, rehearse over Zoom and then record a "performance". I'll offer to share it with the Keppel teachers in case they would like to put it on their own Google Classroom. It might  be fun for some of the young kids to be an audience. Oh! I can definitely put it out for the 1st grade classes that I'm teaching right now. ๐Ÿ˜„

Who's in? email me if you want to participate - cgilbert@gusd.net

And, of course...
